Provation is proud to celebrate the remarkable career of Dr. Michael (Mike) McMurtry, VP of Clinical Documentation & Strategy, as he steps into retirement after more than 26 years of service. Dr. Mike has been a central figure in shaping GI and endoscopy informatics, leaving an imprint that will influence clinicians, health systems, and product innovation for years to come.
A Legacy of Leadership in GI Clinical Documentation

Dr. Mike joined Provation in 1999 and quickly became a driving force behind the company’s GI and endoscopy software strategy. He led the design and evolution of Provation® MD and Provation® Apex, products now used by thousands of gastroenterologists across the country. Under his guidance, these solutions grew into trusted platforms known for supporting efficient, accurate procedure documentation and deep EHR integration.
His focus on medical content development and structured data capture transformed how GI practices document and learn from their procedures. What began as a transition away from narrative dictation has become a national infrastructure that supports daily clinical workflows, quality reporting, benchmarking, and research across major health systems.
Championing Innovation and the Future of GI Informatics
Beyond his operational leadership, Dr. Mike consistently positioned Provation at the forefront of emerging technologies. He played an essential role in bringing big data, interoperability, and AI into mainstream GI workflows — work highlighted in Gastroenterology & Endoscopy News’s “Technology Spotlight.”
He also drove thought leadership efforts, including Provation-sponsored discussions on the future of data-driven GI care, clinical decision support, and predictive modeling. His vision helped the industry see what modern GI documentation could accomplish when software is thoughtfully designed and clinically informed.
Chief Commercial Officer Michael DeRosier summed up this influence, noting, “You’ve always gone above and beyond to create exceptional experiences for our customers and have always set the bar for what greatness looks like. For so many, you’ve long been the face of Provation — trusted, respected, and admired.”
Elevating Quality, Interoperability, and the GI Community
Dr. Mike’s work reached well beyond product development. He helped strengthen the GI community’s approach to quality measurement and interoperability, including Provation’s collaboration and integration with GIQuIC. This capability enabled automated, accurate submission of colonoscopy and EGD data elements to support quality indicator tracking and quality metrics reporting such as ADR, withdrawal time, bowel prep adequacy, and appropriate surveillance intervals.
His contributions supported accreditation needs, value-based care requirements, and the day-to-day realities of running efficient endoscopy units. His commitment to education has also made an impact nationwide. As Jeremy Straley, Sr. Tech Implementation Consultant, shared, “You have directly contributed to my success in training thousands of MDs across the states and Puerto Rico.”
Colleagues throughout the organization echoed similar sentiments, pointing to Dr. Mike’s deep GI medical knowledge and unwavering customer-first attitude for setting a standard at Provation. Others praised Dr. Mike for showing positivity and kindness that made him an exceptional resource during his tenure.
A Lasting Impression
What stands out most about Dr. Mike’s impact goes beyond the scale of his accomplishments. His humility, calm guidance, and collaborative style shaped teams, strengthened customer relationships, and helped build Provation’s reputation in the GI community. As one colleague put it best, “Despite your expertise and accomplishments, you’ve always led with grace, kindness, and collaboration.”
Provation is deeply grateful for Dr. Mike’s decades of vision, mentorship, and service. His leadership has helped define who we are today and how we will continue serving clinicians and patients in the future.
And while this marks the start of a new chapter for him personally, we’re excited to share that Mike will continue supporting Provation as a part-time consultant beginning in February 2026.
