About Dr. Michael S. Smith

Dr. Smith currently serves as the Chief of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Mount Sinai West & Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Hospitals in New York. Leading the endoscopy specialty and using his medical and business expertise, Dr. Smith has become a thought-leader, advocate and user of Provation solutions.

When Dr. Smith began his first year as a gastroenterology fellow at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital, he and his peers were documenting endoscopy procedures by hand, dictating them by phone, printing out photos and stapling them to reports–leaving room for misinterpretation, errors and lost patient reports.

The hospital implemented Provation MD for GI procedure documentation shortly after, and Dr. Smith quickly realized the benefits of the software. He wanted to partner with Provation, offering suggestions for medical content and advanced features to implement into the software.

“It became clear that Provation not only saw value in what I could contribute as a gastroenterologist, but they recognized that continuous input from physicians was crucial to the success of their solutions and their position as a market leader,” said Dr. Smith. “It’s been an incredible opportunity to collaborate in a way that benefits Provation, clinician users, and most importantly, patients.”

Dr. Smith’s Involvement with Provation® Apex

When Provation began developing its cloud-based, multispecialty procedure documentation offering, Provation Apex, Dr. Smith provided extensive feedback on product features, content and workflows for endoscopy procedures within the new software as a service (SaaS) platform.

Helping Provation focus on further reducing documentation time and increasing efficiency, Dr. Smith meets regularly with the product team, including Dr. Mike McMurtry, Provation’s Head of Medical Content and Informatics, to ensure all features are working optimally.

“What I love about Provation’s on-premise solution, Provation MD, is that it provides me with a consistent way of explaining my procedures to my colleagues,” said Dr. Smith. “With Provation Apex, Provation continues to offer a best-in-class solution with even more features, functionality and customization.”

The Benefits of Provation Apex

Because Provation Apex is web-based, it gives physicians the opportunity to document from any environment, so they are no longer tied to a workstation, away from their patients. Dr. Smith sees cloud-based solutions as the future of documentation and believes flexibility while documenting will significantly increase physician satisfaction.

“Provation has a unique commitment to incorporating new endoscopic and technological developments into its solutions,” said Dr. Smith. “With Provation Apex, physicians do not need to worry about being ‘out-of-date,’ because updates and backups are run automatically through the cloud. This SaaS solution will truly revolutionize the way gastroenterologists go about their daily workflows.”

It’s clear that Provation Apex was developed and influenced by physicians, for physicians.
