4 Benefits of Mobile Electronic Anesthesia Charting Software

In today’s fast-paced healthcare environment, maximizing efficiency and improving patient care is paramount. Anesthesia providers at a major health system in Florida recognized this and chose to take action by leveraging the electronic anesthesia charting software, Provation® iPro to automate their perioperative encounters on a mobile tablet.

With this cutting-edge mobile Anesthesia Information Management System (AIMS), the anesthesiologists and CRNAs were better able to ensure safe and effective patient experiences. Read more to learn how!

1. Get Real-time Access to Critical Data

Because Provation iPro can be used on a mobile tablet, patient data becomes instantly available and accessible to CRNAs and anesthesia physicians. Gone are the days of relying solely on desktop computers to view and update patient information. The ability to carry the tablet throughout the facility enables anesthesia providers to make informed decisions with real-time insights into ongoing cases.

“We have it immediately available at our, at our disposal,” said Dr. Din Kagalwala, Chief & Medical Director of Anesthesia, “If I need to see what’s occurring in the operating room as far as vital signs and the progression of the case, I can access Provation iPro to see that and determine the flow of the case. This really helps us during an extremely busy day where I may not necessarily need to go into the operating room to determine what’s actually occurring in the case.”

2. Experience a Smooth Transition with Expert Implementation

With the Director of Clinical Systems, Robert Altiero, working alongside the Provation support team, charging stations were set up to create a process for the mobile tablets to be checked in and out throughout the day. The fear of potential challenges was quickly dispelled, as the iPads proved to be highly reliable and durable.

“I think moving these folks onto a portable iPad is a great model,” he said. “We were a little bit tentative about how that would work out, but it’s worked out very, very well. We check them in, check them out, keep them charged, and have plenty of them. We have not had massive numbers disappear or breakage issues at all. We’ve managed to keep them in pretty good shape and ensured some hot swaps are ready to go in case they’re needed.”

To address concerns about device charging, Robert Altiero advised dedicating time to finding the right charging banks and anticipating future needs. By strategically managing charging stations and having spare devices readily available, interruptions due to low battery or technical issues are minimized. This ensures smooth operations and allows anesthesia providers to focus on patient care instead of logistical challenges.

Dr. Mark Wittman, Director of Cardiac Anesthesiology, led the way toward the adoption of Provation iPro. “I’m a perfectionist, so we had to get it right and we did,” he said. “We have a large variety of practitioners from very young, very tech adopted who have no problems at all, to middle-aged, you know, older staff that were a little hesitant, but everybody adopted [Provation iPro] after a very short period of time. And it was especially easy since we use it on the iPad, which is so close to an iPhone or any standard smartphone.”

3. Eliminate the Need for Stationary Desktops

This mobility empowers anesthesiologists and CRNAs to access critical patient information and documentation anytime, anywhere, without being tethered to a specific location. CRNA, Katie Arckey, described how this has helped her streamline the postoperative recovery stage for the patient.

“When you bring the patient to recovery, you have to monitor their vital signs there. We were fighting for workstations to be able to do that. So the fact that [Provation iPro] is mobile makes the process much easier. And then also the anesthesiologists can easily jump in between patients by looking to Provation iPro to get a snapshot of what’s going on in the room.”

The mobility and extended battery life of iPads also ensure uninterrupted access to patient information, streamlining communication and facilitating quick interventions when necessary.

“There are often times when we have to change our anesthetic last minute or change it during a procedure. If all of a sudden aspiration happens or there’s another emergency situation, Provation iPro allows us to switch between different charts easily so that it’s easy to document and you’re able to focus on the patient instead of sitting there taking the time to chart.”

4. Streamline Workflows with a User-Friendly Interface

The user-friendly interface of Provation iPro was designed by practicing anesthesiologists to specifically support the workflow for anesthesia professionals. Its intuitive design facilitates efficient charting and documentation, allowing providers to focus more on patient care and less on administrative tasks. And providers can instantly sign charts or update documentation inside or outside of the operating room.

AIMS Analyst, Jenn Sykes, said, “The portability of Provation iPro is extremely beneficial for staff. It’s very easy. As opposed to having to constantly round and physically check in on each room, they’re able to go in and visualize exactly what’s happening with the patient, which is a huge time saver.”

Anesthesia providers can easily navigate the system, document procedures, and access patient data with minimal disruption, ultimately enhancing workflow productivity.

“It’s just been so easy to use, and it’s allowed us to focus more on our job and to not worry about the paperwork as much,” said CRNA, Katie Arckey. “I think if I was looking for a new job, I would definitely take into consideration whether or not they had Provation iPro.”
